How do you let the others know? There is actually no right or wrong way to do it. You are the one that has to live with your actions, and if you are comfortable with them and they are not mean and overbearing, then do it your way. However, if you are new at the online dating thing and have no idea how to extricate yourself from an online relationship with a little style and panache, here are some suggestions.
1. There is the basic choice of not responding to any email they send you
2. Let them know you are going out of town for a while.
3. Tell them there is something in their profile that just does not appeal to you, such as dating someone with children, or dating someone without a job, etc.
4. Tell them that you have no desire to have a long-distance relationship if they live far away.
5. Thank them for their time, but let them know you have met someone else.
6. Try the “Let’s be friends” approach.
7. Tell them you still have unresolved issues from your last relationship and do not feel it would be fair to start a new one at this time.
8. Let them know it was nice to meet, but you are just not feeling any chemistry with her.
9. Tell her she seems nice, but you don’t think meeting in person is a good idea.
10. Claim that things at work have become overwhelming, and you don’t have time for a relationship.
11. Tell them they are simply not the right fit for you, because your interests do not coincide.
12. Tell her that you got back together with your ex.
13. You can always be honest and tell her exactly why you don’t want to continue, but you should probably do it nicely!
14. Mention some things about yourself that are potential deal breakers, such as not believing in marriage, or wanting to live in a commune, or that marijuana should be legalized.
15. Say that you are looking for someone younger/older/blonder/skinnier, etc.
16. Turn down her invitation to meet in person.
It is always best to be polite, unless she starts being nasty and acting like a virtual stalker. Then, you can resort to tactics like blocking her from you IM list, changing your screen name, turning her into the system administrator, etc.
Typically, you should wish them the best of luck in their search for love, and say that it was nice to meet them online. While it is better to give some sort of excuse as opposed to just disappearing, you can do whatever works for you.
