Penis Enlargement Surgery
Penile Augmentation Surgery (in medical terms known as Phalloplasty) has been available for decades. According to Dr E. Douglas Whitehead who is a well-known specialist in male genital surgery, around 40,000 men worldwide have undergone penis surgery. In American, alone, around 5,000 men go for penis surgery purely on cosmetic grounds every year. Although penis surgery has been around for several years, the surgery was slow to be perfected.
It is not surprising that penis enlargement surgery is gaining popularity because nowadays men are particular on how they look externally and internally. Although penis enlargement surgery is recognized globally by medical profession, it is considered an expensive and dangerous ways for enlarging penis.
Several prominent organizations like the American Urological Association and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery still views penis surgery to be of high risk and they have state publicly that the effectiveness and safety of the procedures have not yet been fully established.
There are reports that many plastic surgeons either refuse to carry out the procedures or have now stopped performing penis surgery because of the enormous risks involved and the complications that can arise.
Surgical Lengthening Procedure - How it works
Surgical lengthening of the penis is achieved by cutting the suspensory ligaments that support and connect the penis to the pubic bone. When these ligaments that secured approximately half the length of the penile shaft within the body is cut, it drops forward and extends out, encouraging a larger portion of the penis to be exposed, thus creating the illusion of a longer penis. The penis is therefore, not actually enlarged but just pulled further out of the body.
After the operation is performed, part of the postoperative treatment includes stretching of the penis using traction device to prevent the severed suspensory ligament from healing shorter than it was before. Without the use of traction device to stretch the gains achieved through surgery, all gains are often lost.
Results
The effectiveness of the surgery varies from each individual and it is impossible to determine likely results before the actual surgery. Gains in flaccid length are by far the most noticeable. Majority of men achieve an increase of around one inch in flaccid length following surgery. According to a study where 58 men who underwent the surgery were involved, the average penis gain in erect penis length was less than half an inch. Unfortunately gains in erect length are often less dramatic.
In reality, some men do not experience any gain in length but experience a shortening due to the fibrosis, formation of scar tissue that toughens and shrinks after the surgery. In order to prevent this type of tissue shrinkage, traction device are used to stretch the penis as part of the postoperative treatment. Without this stretching, initial gains are often lost.
A comprehensive study that was published by the Electronic Journal of Human Sexuality involves 58 men ranging in age from 22 to 67 revealed average penis length following surgery increased from 5.4 to only 5.7 inches. 69% of this study sample stated that the gains in length had not lived up to their expectations.
Apart from the apparent lack of significant gains in erect penis length, the cutting of the suspensory ligament has further detrimental consequences. One of the most noticeable side effects of the procedure is that the angle of erection is significantly reduced. Without the suspensory ligaments to support the penis, erections usually point straight out or even downward, making it look less aesthetically appealing during sex. A more serious disadvantage is that the penis is more susceptible to injury because the penis is no longer firmly in place.
Penile Girth Augmentation – How It works
One of the ways to increase penis girth surgically is the use of a technique known as Fat Transfer. This procedure has been in use since the early 1990’s and involved the removal of fat cells from the abdomen or inner thighs through the use of liposuction. The fact cells were than purified and then injecting along the length of the penile shaft between the erectile tissue and the skin of the penis.
Unfortunately Fat Transfer method often failed to produce permanent girth gains, the fat injected into the penis would be gradually reabsorbed back into the body and the increase in girth is partially lost over a period of time. It also possible that the fat cells will not be reabsorbed evenly or group together to form fibro-fatty which results in the penis developing asymmetry or a lumpy uneven appearance.
It is not uncommon for patients to go for further treatments to correct these problems. Another problem is that when the penis is erect, the fat cells often feel softer than the erectile tissue underneath. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) considers girth enlargement to be high risk and notes there is not enough data presently available to establish its safety and effectiveness.
Results
In the research sample of men studies, flaccid girth gains following the surgery had increased from an average of 3.1 inches to an average of 4.1 inches, while the erect girth gains an average of average 4.1 to 4.8 inches after surgery.
Surgery Myth
Increasing penis size through surgery is a safe and cost effective method.
Keep in mind that there are risks involved with any surgical procedure. With regard to penile augmentation surgery, The American Urological Association does not consider the techniques involved to be safe or effective. Whilst surgery may be considered a valid option for those with documented medical conditions, it could be seen as a rather drastic solution in any other circumstance.
It is vital that you consult with a physician whether such a procedure would be warranted. Penis enlargement surgery does not come cheap and is an expensive option. The costs of different types of penile surgery available range from US$3,000 to US$10,000.00. But don’t forget, you may have to fork out additional money to rectify problem arising from it. Penis surgery should be your last option.
