What Is Testosterone And How Does It Work?

Testosterone is the main hormone found in the male reproductive system. It falls in the steroid family, and plays an important part in a male's sexual activity during puberty and throughout life.

Testosterone is what is known as the main male hormone. It is important throughout a man's life as it plays an important role not only in puberty, but in sexual activity and pro-creation as well.

During puberty, testosterone is very important, as it causes the male voice to deepen and masculinity to prevail. It is a member of the steroid family of hormones. It has been found that 95 percent of circulating testosterone found in a male's body is produced in the testicles under the influence of a hormone called luteinizing hormone or (LH). This hormone is released by the pituitary gland. LH is released in spurts throughout the day that stimulate the release of testosterone from the testicles. These signals are particularly strong in the early morning, which can account for the higher levels of testosterone and possible spontaneous erections that often take place at this time.

In late evening, the testosterone levels can fall by 50 percent, which can then trigger the end of that particular cycle and the beginning of another the next morning. This can also explain the increase of sexual desire in early morning.

As a male matures, his body still produces testosterone, which is what helps maintain and enhance the changes that were brought on by puberty. Once a male is fully grown, testosterone can also enhance sexual drive, but sometimes helps level out the sexual drive as well.

Testosterone is the hormone that sets the characteristics of a man apart from those of a woman, just as estrogen does in the female body. It is responsible for the changes in the male anatomy that take place during puberty, as well as the continuing stimulation that occurs throughout a man's life. It can also determine how sexually active a man will be as well as when erections will and won't occur.

Though there are other hormones that take part in sexual reproduction, testosterone is, perhaps, the most important. It is also the most predominant one found in the male body. Throughout a man's life, it may become necessary to have the testosterone levels checked to make sure it will be possible for him to reproduce. A physician can provide information and advice about when this will be necessary, and can also help to increase it if necessary.
